In the last post I briefly mentioned that The Pirates of Penzance is performed in different styles. Some performances are sung like musicals, and some are sung like operas. In this post, you’ll hear the difference in singing style by listening to clips of two performances of the same song.

Listen to 27:18 to 28:46 of this (the opera version):

Then 21:30 to 23:16 of this (the Broadway version):

So now you can decide for yourself which style you like better.

Next time, we will look at the finale of Act I, and you will hear the most famous song of the operetta: I Am the Very Model of a Modern Major General.
